Description

Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz is a highly regarded red wine produced by Penfolds, one of Australia's most prestigious and iconic wineries. The Bin series represents a collection of wines that highlight Penfolds' expertise in crafting exceptional expressions of specific grape varieties and regions. Bin 128 Shiraz is a single-varietal wine that showcases the Shiraz grape, also known as Syrah in some regions. The grapes are sourced from select vineyards in the cool-climate region of Coonawarra, located in South Australia. Coonawarra is known for producing elegant and structured wines with pronounced varietal characteristics. In the glass, Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz typically displays a vibrant garnet or ruby color, reflecting its freshness and youthful nature. On the nose, it offers an aromatic bouquet of red and black fruits, such as raspberries, blackberries, and cherries, along with hints of spice, pepper, and subtle oak nuances. When it comes to taste, this Shiraz delivers a medium-bodied palate with a refined structure. It presents flavors of juicy berries, plums, and spice, accompanied by fine-grained tannins and a balanced acidity. The wine's oak aging contributes to its complexity and adds subtle layers of vanilla and cedar. Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz is known for its elegance, finesse, and aging potential. While it can be enjoyed in its youth, it also has the capacity to develop further complexity and nuance with proper cellaring. This wine pairs well with a variety of dishes, including roasted lamb, grilled meats, game, and flavorful cheeses. Its medium-bodied profile and balanced structure make it a versatile choice for a range of culinary experiences.

Tasting Notes

COLOUR Shiny plum red NOSE An assortment of gamey scents (to remind of an Italian salumeria!) – cured venison, sweet smell of bresaola, and finocchiona (salami with fennel seeds). Not to preclude the local – a suggestion of kangaroo prosciutto, yet a definite assertion of the red dust of regional Coonawarra. Redcurrant – crushed raspberry/cherry pip and a dried herb crustiness – thyme flowers? Certainly quite a bit arising from the glass ... Coonawarra complexity! PALATE Medium-bodied – well-proportioned, yet not big. Layered. Appetising, juicy ... laced with cracked black pepper, red spices (Hungarian paprika) and caraway. A skerrick of (cherrywood) oak and brick-dust tannins – verging on chalky Fruits evident, yet the savouries beckon greater attention (glazed meats, green olive, capers). Yet another manifestation of the flavours and structure of cooler-climate French oak-matured shiraz ... channelled via a Penfolds winemaking lens.
